I was really happy with how this song came together. I came up with the backing guitar melody in the chorus by humming along to the demo version. I love the double-tracked bass on Free Falling by Tom Petty, so I though we'd try it on this one. It worked! I had the melody and chords to the song completely written without the slightest idea of what the song would be about. This happens more often than I'd like to admit. I disciplined myself to sit down one day and write lyrics to it. What you hear is what I wrote that day, except the chorus, which Bill Reveles wrote, and which tied the song together. I was originally going to call the song "Man in the Moon", but was worried that it sounded to common or too much like the famous R.E.M. song, "Man on the Moon". Bill came up with the twist to call it "Man INSIDE the Moon", which I thought was great.
Lyrics
Along the edge is where I crawl
Looking in from without
At nothing at all
Can you see the light around my eyes
Doesn't help to know
My own disguise
It's a long way out
Starlight bound
The man inside the moon
Is there anything saved
Of the good that left too soon
There inside the moon
Is there anything safe
From the things I always do
Air is leaving
Come up soon
Grab a piece
Of what's slipping through
The trees are quiet but still talking
Do they know that I'm still waiting
Another tune
Is coming soon
The man inside the moon
Is there anything saved
Of the good that left too soon
There inside the moon
Is there anything safe
From the things I always do
Always do
There's a tire on the road
There's a rocket up in space
There's a man looking for
Something he's already found
The man inside the moon
Is there anything saved
Of the good that left too soon
There inside the moon
Is there anything safe
From the things I always do
Always do
Always do
